FAQ frequently asked questions

Is there an Indiana law that prohibits me from wearing a mask while carrying a handgun?
No
How do I find the status of my application?
Due to privacy laws, we may not give the status of your application over the phone. You may use your application number and password to check your status at the following site: https://firearms.ariesportal.com/Public/Login.aspx. Alternatively, you may bring your driver's license or state ID to your local law enforcement agency or the Indiana State Police at the following address: 100 North Senate Avenue, 3rd Floor, East Wing, Indianapolis, Indiana 46204.
I chose the wrong type of permit.
Once you have submitted the firearm application, the license type cannot be changed. When you visit your local agency, you will need to inform them of the mistake. The agency should collect the fee for the license type you actually meant to apply for and contact the State Police and the license will be changed. If you paid online, you will be invoiced for the additional state fee.
I entered my information incorrectly on my application.
If you have not visited your local law enforcement agency yet, they may be able to update select fields on your application. Otherwise you will need to write a notarized letter to the Indiana State Police indicating the mistake and correction that should be made to the application. This letter can be mailed to the following address: ATTN: Firearms Indiana State Police 100 North Senate Avenue, 3rd Floor, East Wing, Indianapolis, Indiana 46204.
  Who is my local agency?
If you reside in the city limits, your local law enforcement agency would be the police department or town marshal of the city where you reside. If you reside out of the city limits, your local law enforcement agency would be the sheriff of your county.
Do I need to include expunged convictions on my application?
Expunged convictions are not required to be listed on the Indiana Handgun Carry License Application.
If I do not live in Indiana, can I still have an Indiana firearm license?
If you are a resident of another state and have a regular place of business or employment in Indiana, you qualify for a 5 year personal protection firearm license. Your local agency will be the sheriff of the county in which you have a regular place of business or employment. You will be asked to upload the following documents on your application: 1. Print, complete, sign and notarize the Out-of-State Affidavit form stating you meet out-of-state residence requirements. 2. Provide a proof of employment on company letterhead.
How long will it take to get my license?
For NEW applications, if there are no mistakes on your application and you have no criminal history, your license should be issued within 60 days from the time your local authority submitted your application to ISP.
How long does it take to get a refund if I cancel my license?
Refunds take approximately 3 to 4 weeks and will be mailed to the address indicated on the application.
I have forgotten my password and no longer have access to my original email address. How can I log into my account?
Select ‘Login’ and add your application number to the Application Number field. Select ‘Create Account’ and then enter the requested information to match with what was originally used when the application was created. If the data matches, you will be able to update your password and email address.
